                        Blithe Spirit

Halloween arrives early this year when MorrisCo Art Theatre presents the haunting comedy Blithe Spirit, by Noel Coward, at the Riverside Arts Center, 76 N. Huron St., Ypsilanti, Michigan, on October 23—25, 2008.

The play, first produced in 1941 at the Savoy Theatre in London, is a classic British comedy, and originally starred Margaret Rutherford as Madame Arcati, the kooky medium.

The MorrisCo cast includes both long-time company members and new faces on the MorrisCo scene. Jeff Stringer plays novelist Charles Condomine, who opens a can of worms when, in connection with a book he is writing, he invites Madame Arcati (played by Pat Rector) to hold a séance at his house.

As a result of this phantasmic foray, Charles’ late first wife, the selfish and spoiled Elvira (Lyndsay Michalek), is conjured into appearing, whereupon she sets to disrupting Charles' marriage to his current wife, Ruth (Jan Blixt). Being visible only to Charles, Elvira’s troublemaking snowballs to its inevitable comic conclusion, resulting in double the headache for Charles. 

Also appearing are David Keosaian and Christy Rishoi (as Dr. and Mrs. Bradman), and Margie Cohen as the somewhat daft maid, Edith, who has an “otherworldy” talent above and beyond mixing martinis. MorrisCo Artistic Director Susan Morris directs the production.

MorrisCo Art Theatre is a 501(c)(3) non-profit theatre, and has been producing high-quality modern dramas and comedies since its inception in 1995.
